How to Draw Lightning McQueen. The Cars movie is one of the most vivid and imaginative films Pixar has made. It was a massive hit with audiences and was popular enough to garner two sequels, video game adaptations, books, and television shows.

The main character is the bright and colorful Lightning McQueen, an arrogant racing car. He has many fans both in his films and in the real world, and those fans with hands instead of wheels often love drawing Lightning McQueen. If you’re one of those fans, this is your guide!
How to Draw Lightning McQueen
Step 1
Drawing a car can be a real challenge at best, and just because it’s an animated character doesn’t make it any easier! However, there is nobody to bother about as we will do it slowly in this step-by-step How to Draw Lightning McQueen tutorial.
First, let’s draw the upper part of his body. You can start with a vertical line that gently curls into a horizontal line that extends to the right. Hence there will be a shorter curved line coming down from the first. This takes care of the entire Lightning McQueen upper section, and once you’re ready, we can move on to the next part!
Step 2
In this step, we’ll add a lot to your Lightning McQueen drawing, but it’s not as intimidating as it sounds! We’ll start with the front part of the character and extend this part from the top of the car. Start with a horizontal line below the line on the left side of the top of the vehicle from the previous step.
This will curve down and down into another horizontal line, and you can draw a circular shape for the car’s first tire. You can also see a small portion of the tire on the left. You can add another rounded line for the rear wheel and then draw another curved line for the spoiler on top of the car’s rear.
Step 3
You have most of the overall outline for this design, so in the next steps of this how-to-draw Lightning McQueen guide, we will add some interior details for him.
Start with a curved line for the top of the bumper and fill in the space between the lines. You can use another curved line near the top of Lightning’s front for the windshield, along with some minor details. Finally, for this step, you can paint a large number 95 on the side of the car door.
Step 4
We’ll add even more detail to your Lightning McQueen drawing in this step:
- He uses a few more curved horizontal lines on the inside of his windshield to give expression to his eyes.
- Let’s draw circles in her eyes for her pupils. We also draw her smiling mouth under the bumper; you can color it black.
- Draw circular shapes inside the wheels for the car’s rims, then remove small exhaust pipes on the side.

Step 5
This fifth step of our guide on how to draw Lightning McQueen will cover the conclusion with some details and final touches. You can remove the Lightyear branding on the wheels with a few small block letters. Then you can add some small square shapes inside the border. The rest of the details we need to add will be small but effective!
First, you can draw some flame decals around 95 on the page. Next, we’ll outline some rounded rectangular shapes for the headlights. These, along with some minor touches throughout the design, complete the whole thing. You could even add some elements of your own to top it off! Maybe you could draw a background or add other characters from the movie to go with it.
Step 6
Now we can complete your Lightning McQueen design with some excellent colors! Lightning’s primary color is bright red, with yellow accents for the side decals. There’s also a bit of blue in her eye design, and we have all those classic colors in our reference image.
If you want to mimic the vivid film look, you can use mediums like acrylic paints and colored markers to bring out the colors.
